Tassels

Tassels are such an easy way to embellish knitting or crochet pieces, and they are easy to make as well. You can make the tassels as long, short, full, thin as you like, mix different yarns or maybe a contrasting yarn for the tie on the tassel. The opportunities are endless! If you've never made tassels before, here's a step-by-step photo tutorial on how to make them.

For these tassels you only need scissors, a darning needle (blunt)(You'll discover why later) and yarn. You can use a template to wrap the yarn around, but I made my tassels by wrapping the yarn around three fingers to get the size I wanted.

Cut 2 strands approx. 20 cm (8”) and thread one of them on the darning needle.

Wrap the yarn around three fingers, I wrapped 30 rounds for a medium full tassel.

Once you’ve wrapped enough rounds it’s time to tie the top of the tassel. Use the darning needle to thread the yarn underneath all the wraps, twice, make sure you leave almost half the cut yarn as tail to tie the knot. (This is why you want the darning needle to be blunt.)

Pull tight and tie a double knot (at this point you can pull the tassel off your fingers)

Take the 2nd pre cut strand of yarn and wrap a few times around the tassel, approx 0.7 cm (1/4”) below the top knot, pull tight-ish and tie a double knot.

To hide the ties, insert the darning needle under the wraps and pull the yarn ends through.

Cut open the bottom of the tassels and trim the ends even.

Ta-da! The tassel is ready to tie onto your knitting or crochet piece!
